It Can't Be Moncton Everynight and other thoughts
So yeah maybe I para-phrased a Hip lyric for the title of this entry - but hey if I am going to quote somebody, at least they're good and Canadian!
Last week I was in Mocton, NB for the 10th Hubcap Comedy Festival. Amazing how fast ten years goes by. There are a lot of festivals in this great country - Montreal, Halifax, Winnipeg which are then broadcast on TV. Sadly the Hubcap is not televised and is seriously one of the best festivals out there. Robert, Marshall and their entire staff, especially Matt and Steve (did you guys get any sleep?) once again managed to put on another top notch roster together for these amazing few days. Brent Butt, Tim Steeves, Jen Grant, Mark Forward, Steve Patterson, Andre Grose (he has the best blog in comedy visit www.andrewgrose.com) just to name a few of the many performers. After 18 years of being in this business I am still humbled at the thought that these fellow artists consider me their friend and equal - what a great time and what an honor to be a part of that. Here's to another many more years of the Hubcap and many more appearances for me in the very friendly, hospitable and drink friendly Moncton.
While I was there the Olympics started, so while two thirds of Canada was watching the opening ceremonies I was on stage entertaining people who obviously feel like I do - if there is nothing else to do I guess I'll watch. Other than hockey there is no sport that I would go out of my way to watch. As a proud Canuck I was very happy that Alexandre Bilodeau and M. Ricker struck gold, but before that I had never seen a moguls event, I have hit a mogul or two while skiing, and can tell you that I was not as graceful when I hit them. And I'll admit maybe I get a bit misty eyed when you see them on the podium and Oh Canada is played. Speaking of our National Anthem - I did see the recap of the opening ceremonies and Nikki Yanofsky!!!??? I agree that at 16 years of age, she is very talented and will probably and hopefully be a worldwide singing sensation, however. As my CJAD co-worker and friend Dan Laxer mentioned and discussed on his show - that "Believe" song. I believe it isn't that great (insert your boos here). Why do the Olympics have to have some local artist sing some song about beliefs, going faster, higher etc. What happened to "Olympic Fanfare" by ELP still sounds good to me. At least Nikki sang the song for herself, see Beijing opening ceremonies where they pulled a Milli Vanilli on the world. And one last thing why did anyone feel the need to jazz up Oh Canada? Jazz sucks, sounds like chaos on instruments - the original is still the best. New Coke sucked, AfterM*A*S*H sucked and the new version of the anthem that night ... Leave it as is.
So Joey has spoken high marks for Moncton, lower grades for the Games
until next time keep laughing
