Return to the Scene of the....
Over the past 18 years of performing stand-up, I have had some great shows in great places, bad shows in great places and of course just doing shows in odd places. Weddings, that funny comedy inducing ritual of cutting of a young jewish infant's foreskin (it's true), even performed once for friends and family of a guy that was killed in a car crash that was a fan of mine. Now I often get asked to come speak to groups. Book clubs, Legions etc - lately the topic has been my travels overseas to entertain the military. But yesterday - I was invited as a speaker at a teacher's convention to try and teach teachers how to use humour in the classroom. Here I was at a teacher's convention telling how to do things, the very things that got me kicked out of class so many years ago. If that wasn't weird enough, it took place in my old high school.
So here I was in the very building, talking to some of the teachers that taught me - shouldn't they be retired by now? And it reminded me of some of the great pranks I, along with my friends pulled back in the day.
Parking a teacher's car in the baseball field across the street from the school, removing the recess bell from the wall and over the now gaping hole writing "No-Bell Prize" Taking super glue and gluing a quarter to the floor and watching to see how many people would stop to try and pick it up. The memories - funny how they all seem like good ones now but back then all we wanted was to get out of that place. The only bad part of the day - seeing the grad photos from 1989 hanging on the wall - really Flock of Seagulls haircut? Why did nobody warn me!
The lecture went well - took a few questions at the end - one of the questions I answered by telling a teacher "just because you are educated doesn't mean you are smart" The others laughed, phew, but really I meant that. It was fun going back, visiting the hallowed halls that gave me the discipline needed to sleep all day, and tell dick jokes at night. All these years later I finally returned to the scene of my crimes.
Keep laughing
