We Will Always Remember
|
Usually I try and write something pertaining to comedy - but not today. Remembrance day - with the current situation as it is everyday is one that we should be remembering those brave men and women that are serving our country - away from their loved ones. I have been very lucky to have spent time with these man and women - Rwanda, Haiti, Afghanistan twice and the memories and stories that I have been provided with - a lifetime of memories. In an odd way I received an email from a soldier that I met in 1995 on my first trip to entertain the troops. It was in Rwanda his name is Mike. I had seen him a few times since then but lost contact with him over the years but was so happy to get that email from him - I can't wait to get in touch with him and meet up for a drink or two, sit back get caught up and remeber! I think of a soldier I watched hug his wife for what seemed to be forever before boarding a plane to Afghanistan a few summers ago. I sat next to him on the plane and we spoke - Steve - wherever you are you are in my thoughts today and I hope you are safe and doing well, pending time with your wife and children at the Go-Karts as you said that was the most enjoyable thing that you and the family did together - I remember. I think of Abdul, a Canadian citizen originally from Afghanistan. I met him on the second leg of my trip to Afghanistan as he told me he was leaving his family and life in Ontario to go back to Afghanostan to work for the Canadian Government as a liason. The real reason, he heard his parents were still alive, and there was a small chance he may get to see them - he remembered as do I. I have said this numerous times - whether you think we should be stationed overseas or not, that is a topic to take up with the politicians - we must however support our troops until the last one comes home. We must let them know that we think of them everyday, and hope they all come home safe and sound. To me anyone wearing a uniform in the Canadian Armed Forces are heroes. I respect everyone that is wearing that uniform or that has worn that uniform. I think of Mr. Ross a veteran that I met this past summer at a fundraising event - a veteran that was on the beach on D-Day. Hero! I think of meeting and listening to Gen. R. Dallaire speak, and after everything he has seen he still has compassion and believes in the kindness of mankind - hero. So to all the men and women that have served or that are serving in the Forces I say thank you - and we shall never forget! |
