What a Night
I have had the priviledge of being a part of the Just for Laughs Festival 12 times now, having done various shows. This year I performed at the Comedy Night in Canada series, as well as hosting the "Eat My Shorts" portion of Comedia. (In my opinion the fest's hidden gem). But on July 20, I hosted in what is my opinion the greatest show I have ever been a part of - "Just For Laughs Salutes Ernie Butler". The show was put together in memory of the late Ernie Butler with proceeds going towards the Segal Cancer Research here in Montreal. All the comedians worked for free so that as much money as possible could be raised. Ken Doran Jr of Charity Promotions took the bull by the horns and made sure the night would be a success - needless to say it was a complete sell out, and a complete success. What a line-up, it was a Montreal show with a hint of Toronto, all the comics regulars over the years at Ernie's club, and friends of his in the comedy biz over the past years. In my opinion the talent on the show and the performances rivalled that of any gala that took place this past festival.
Gemini nominee Heidi Foss, comedy circuit workaholic Phil Shuchat, that "Funny Bald Negro" (that is the title of his DVD) Jocko Alston, off a gala the previous night Brian Lazanik, and Festival veteran Scott Faulconbridge with a guess appearance by Freddie James was the first half of the show. Then came just back from entertaining our troops overseas Pete Zedlacher, then Montreal's newest adopted son Steve Patterson, then the sharp wit of Kenny Robinson, the first person to perform on a Just For Laughs stage 26 years ago Wayne Fleming then Bowser and Blue closed the show. From minute one to the final good night, the show was stellar - not only because of the talent on stage but because the audience was one of the best - the never tired, they never stopped giving and when I asked if they wanted to continue until Tuesday the response was a loud deafening yes!
Thank you Montreal for being the best audience in the world, thank you for coming out to see a great show honoring Ernie.
There are a list of people that I could thank but the list is far too long, but lets hope that we'll do it agin next year and for many more years and festivals to come.
Cheers
