GEORGE CARLIN 1937-2008
When I turned my computer on this morning, my intention was to write about the few days that I spent in Sudbury, Ontario last week - but with all due respect to the people there it will have to wait.
George Carlin - a once in a lifetime performer has passed away, he was 71 years old.
George Carlin was the first comedian I remember hearing on a vinyl record that my uncle played for me when I was about 11 or 12 years old, I was too young to really appreciate what he was saying, but he was to become my comedic hero. Whether it was the "7 words" or his take on the 10 Commandments, to euphamisms - Carlin was a wordsmith; he knew exactly what word to use at the right time. He could work clean or blue - he pushed the envelope, he pointed out life's absurdities and man's flaws. He was a genius!
I saw him perform twice and both times I watched my hero strut on the stage knowing he owned the room - he knew exactly how to push the people's buttons not only to make them laugh but to think.
I always wanted to be like him when on stage, but I realized early on in my career that was not possible - there was only one Carlin - no one can ever copy him, no one can ever be him - simply put he was one of a kind.
I never met him but had the good fortune to work in Las Vegas with Dennis Blair a funny man as well, that opened for Carlin for many years. Dennis was kind enough to answer my every question I had about Carlin - and I am glad to say he sounded like the type of man I knew he would be.
There is so much I want to say, but I think I can some it up in 7 words:
"THANK YOU GEORGE FOR INSPIRING THIS COMEDIAN!"
The world was a better, funnier place with you on it, you will be missed by millions and by me!
Thank you for everything, we never met, but hopefully one day we will.
RIP GEORGE CARLIN - you will never be forgotten.
