Why the hate for Cherry?
I understand that as a stand-up comedian - most of you probably expect these entries to be funny, or at least an attempt at humour. Having said that, I also realize that this is my personal forum to voice an opinion, my opinion on matters that are "newsworthy". Sure stories from the road, or about my fear of flying are amusing to some (still getting over the flight to and from Hong Kong by the way) but everynow and then I get irked by something I have read or heard. So here we go....
I have grown-up on CBC's "Hockey Night in Canada", from the Saturday night ritual as a young child - watching the game with my father on the old black and white TV (Mom got to watch the colored one in the other room) - I loved the Peter Puck segment, Showdown and of course "Coach's Corner".
Lately, local reporters in the Montreal English newspaper covering the Canadiens miracle run, the drive for 25, whatever you choose to call it - have gotten off topic. Instead of writing an entire article about Halak looking like Ken Dryden, or Mike Camalleri scoring highlight reel goals game after game - they opt to take a paragraph or two and shoot down Don Cherry of CBC's "Coach's Corner".
Does he lack fashion sense - to me he does. Is he loud, you bet. But here is what I tell people that email me about how they hate my radio show - change the channel. If you don't like what's on the tube, there are, how many channels to go to now? And, if the reporters in question are at the game, scoffing the free food in the press box while Cherry is on TV - how do you know what he is saying? Does he mis-pronounce names of certain players - yes. Has he dissed players from French and European decent - yes. I can't argue with that, and I don't agree with everything that Mr. Cherry says but I realize that this is his shtick. Dressing loudly, talking loudly, pushing the envelope - that is what he is all about. If you haven't figured that out after all these years - there are no words to describe how I really feel.
What these reporters fail to miss is his dedication to the game here in Canada - the way he supports minor league hockey programs and the safety of the kids that are playing the game. He is a proud Canadian, as am I.
Last but not least, Don Cherry is the only person I know that continues to honor the memory of fallen Canadian soldiers that have paid the ultimate price while serving their country in Afghanistan. His emotion comes through loud and clear - hey Pat, Jack what have you done for those brave men and women overseas fighting for justice and equality - you shit on the one person that honors them.
So like I said before, if you don't like Don Cherry switch channels when he comes on - that's what I do when I read the sports section in the paper, I skip the articles written by certain people and read the articles that are all about the Habs, no Cherry bashing.
Keep it up Don, I appreciate all that you do as do the men and women in uniform and their families!
Keep laughing!
