Just Having Fun
People always ask me, why I do shows in little places as opposed to the clubs. I can honestly say that 9 times out of ten they are more fun. Examples, the past two weekends I have had shows at the Lion's Club in a small town called Two Mountains (Deux Montagnes) and last night was a comedy night at the Curling club in the municipality of Montreal West. Both gigs were tons of fun and the people who attended these shows all wanted to be there, all wanted to laugh, and were all in that frame of mind. Tons of fun at both. I'm not saying that people at the clubs aren't good, but sometimes you get some people that don't really want to be there and are there because they are part of a group of friends and they were out voted on the matter. I always liked doing these small town gigs, they hospitality is always overwhelming, example a few years back me and fellow comedian Scott Faulconbridge got snowed in doing a show at the community center in a small town an hour away from Ottawa called Cobden. What could have been a long sleepless night turned out to be a night of the town getting us a small hotel room, and I stayed up drinking with two British families until they opened the highways again, that just doesn't happen in the big cities.
But my favorite gig this past week was an afternoon gig at the Erin Sports Association, here in Montreal. They are responsible for the Irishman of the Year breakfast that takes place every Saturday before the St.Patrick's Day Parade. They held a turkey luncheon on Thursday which happened to be American Thanksgiving. They had turkey and all the trimmings, the football game was on the tube, but all money raised that day is going to help needy children over the Christmas holidays. I have never met so many charitable and genuine people that all belong to one association. If everyone was as generous as those men and women the world would be a better place. I thank them for allowing me to be a part of a great day and hopefully many more like it. So that is why I do these "smaller" shows, the money and the venues may not be as good as the clubs, but the feeling you get doing them is worth everything.
Keep laughing,
Joey
