What did you do this weekend?
I've always known that I do things a little different, but I think this adventure takes the cake. See today being Monday - I returned from a weekend gig, that I left to go to on Thursday, a usual occurance in the field of a travelling comedian. However, this gig took me 12 600 KMs away from Montreal and the friendly confines of my home. Where did I go you ask? Hong Kong, yup, to do two 15 minute sets at a Jewish event in Hong Kong.
Let me start by saying, I do not like to fly, let me talk about that for a second before I get onto Jews in Hong Kong.
Flying - do not like it at all, and usually I can tolerate 3, maybe 4 hours on a plane before I go squirrely. Sure I was in Business Class where the seats recline into a bed - perfect! See when fully reclined it feels like you are in some sort of, well, coffin! Excellent in case something goes wrong I have already placed my carcass in its final resting box - who says I don't help out. So between the 15 hour flight and me sitting frozen in fear in my seat kindly sponsored by "Paperman and Sons" I had to put up with 12 hours of turbulence on a 15 hour flight - "Go around it!" Douchbag pilots probably gets off on the shake and bake. Also guy deciding to do yoga in the aisle - "is that my foot in your downward dog's ass?" There is so much room for people like me to pace now I have to dodge a pilates class at 41000 feet? As you can tell, I have the virtue of patience while flying. Having survived the ordeal I arrive in HK and its a crazy little city. The use every inch of land that they are given. I won't go into too much detail about the city other than it is really nice - and I enjoyed my adventures to Stanley Market, Lockhart Road and some secret, sketchy back alley "store" to purchase a gift for that special someone. So the gig, a Jewish event in HK. I figured Jews love Chinese food so they moved to the source. Don't get me started on the deli options over there, smoked meat Honk Kong styles - delicious!
The gig went much better than I thought it would. People were really nice. The money raised goes to various places including a children's hospital in Israel that specializes in pediatric cancer treatments. What was very cool, that night twins that defied the odds and beat cancer from the age of 4 - performed that night. Amazing story, amazing performance and nice to see first hand what the money raised does. Also the band during dinner - a Phillipino lead singer singing in hebrew - led everyone in the hora then did some Lionel Ritchie and Elton John, this guy was incredible.
I returned home yesterday again flying on a beast of a plane - the whole time clenching the ass cheeks beyond tight but made it back.
I must thank Shanni and her husband Eli for being my tour guides and babysitters. Got to see a woman by the name of Tara that now lives with her husband and children in HK - we went to kindergarten together, never know where you will run into fellow classmates. And got to hang out with my ex-Montrealer buddy Kirk for a bit too.
So in conclusion I can say I'm glad I saw HK, too bad I will never get back there, unless by boat or they do to me what they had to do to Mr. T on the A Team to get him to fly. I think I finally just unclenched
keep laughing
