A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum!
For people that know me, know I am a sports fan. I am indeed one of those people that can sit on the couch on a Sunday afternoon and watch be it football, golf, baseball and of course hockey. Hockey is still #1 in my book, it is by far the greatest game out there. Let me also state that I grew up in Montreal - home of Les Canadiens, the Habs - the team with the most Stanley Cups in the history of the game, and I might add the best looking trophy of any sport, Green Jackets are nice but Lord Stanley's chalice va-va-voom!
Growing up I was spoiled, the Habs were a shoe in for the playoffs and having a solid run for the Cup. But those days are long gone. Why? Well for starters there are more teams, which equals more competition. Montreal no longer gets the pick of the litter when it comes to French Quebec players. And of course the game has become a business, the all mighty dollar is what drives some of the owners and as long as the fans put their asses in the seats and they turn a profit, win or lose it has been a succesful year. Not all owners are like that - I know that the previous ownership group here in Montreal wanted a Cup bad, they slept poorly after a loss or elimination as if they themselves were the goalie that let in the game wining goal. Good people that brought back "history" to this storied franchise. But that was then this is now.
The Habs intrigue me - they used to have names on the team that struck a chord in our hearts. I will just name the ones I saw play - Gainey, Lafleur, Robinson, Dryden, Naslund, Shutt, Roy and more recently Koivu. How a man went through what he did, stayed here, fought on and off the ice and was tossed aside without a proper thank you, goodbye and goodluck - surprised and angered me a little. Now we have names like Gomez, Cammalarri, Price, Markov. These names all sound like mercenary names to me - "show me the money and I'll go there" But the new owners are okay with that, it seems. Why else would they ask for $5 admission to the Habs Hall of Fame from people at the game that already shelled out for the tickets - FREE! Admission for people at the game should be free - charge people not at the game to see these items.
So as I sat and watched the game last night watching the Habs blow a lead and lose in OT to the Washington Capitals, I realized a few things. One - Habs fans are turning into excuse makers - "F'n ref, that should have been a penalty" No the team didn't play better than their opponet hence the loss. I hate to say this but the older I get the more Habs fans are starting to look and sound like Toronto fans. Team could be sucky, yet the seats are all full, we lose a game 99% of the time it isn't the teams fault, its the refs, its a bad bounce. No more excuses - this year's team is mediocre at best, maybe next year it will be better but right now this team needs a miracle to go deep into the playoffs (I will be happy to eat my words if they do indeed pull it off and hoist the cup). The other thing I came to realize is that I am a bigger fan of the game than I am of the Habs. I want to see good games with good players making great plays - and that is why when Backstrom scored last night I found myself sitting on the couch smiling - because that goal is what a good hockey player, on a good team when it matters does - he makes the game of hockey exciting - for all fans of the game.
I know I am sounding like an old man, so I will end my rant now - also I think a window is open in the house, I should go close it before I catch a cold from the draft.
Keep laughing, until next time
