Raise a Glass to Old Friends!
|
Apologies for taking time between entries, I was on the road and returned with some sort of bug that knocked me on my ass for almost a full week. But now fully recovered, having cleared my mind with my first round of golf of the year (on April 4th - Climate Change I salute you!) So where to start? Perhaps by instructing you to get Daniel Stern's voice from the "Wonder Years" in your head and read the next paragraph in that tone and voice. I spent my summers as a young man at camp. I thought my parents really wanted to get rid of me - all my friends went to camp an hour or so away from Montreal, not I I had to travel 7 hours on a bus. And was exiled there for almost a full 8 weeks. At first hated it, who were these people from Toronto? Where was I? What can I do to make this fun. After about a week, it didn't matter where I was, as long as I was with this group of people - fun was discovered and shared easily and often. Pranks, food fights, girls, and homeruns (I was informed last week I still hold the record for longest homerun in camp HISTORY at 15 years old) I can go on for hours, in great detail about the people, the stories the fond memories. Well it has been almost 20 years later I last saw the majority of these people, and that's where my weekend in Toronto comes in. The Thursday night show I was visited by campers past - Jay, Shimmy, Enchin, Jordan, Behar - there they were. Two thirds of the BRBs were re-united, and it felt so good. Like old war veterans we sat around over drinks telling story after story (maybe put on the Byrd's TURN TURN TURN at this time) "Gil lived in a tree all summer" "Holy shit, you did steal the camp van and go for a burger" "You dated Jenny Tigay, her boobs were awesome" "We broke into the Tuck store" Things I haven't thought of in years, all of a sudden I couldn't remember what I did earlier that day, but stuff from 1987 was so vivid. I thank you boys - and hope to see you all soon. You are no longer just camp buddies - we are friends - as Bruce Springsteen would say we are "Blood Brothers". Now thinking back I did know and still remeber the directions to camp - second star to the right, straight ahead 'til morning.! Thank you guys! To all of you keep laughing |
